The Opposition Party (LDF) stages walk-out over Govt failure to contain viral fever epidamic



The Opposition Marxist-led Left Democratic Front (LDF) staged a walk-out in the Kerala Assembly today in protest against alleged failure of the government to take measures to contain the spread of viral fever and other diseases.

However, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy assured the House that effective measures were being taken to tackle the situation.

Stating that medicines had been made available in all the government hospitals, he said steps were being taken to fill up the vacancies for doctors in government department.



Health Minister Adoor Prakash said as many as 179 people had lost their lives this year due to leptospirosis, hepatatis and other viral diseases. The situation was being brought under control and there was no cause for panic.

Meanwhile, Leader of the Opposition V S Achuthanandan said the steps taken by the government were not satisfactory as more than 2,000 people lost their lives in the state in the recent past due to viral diseases.



As the Speaker turned down the request for an adjournment motion over the issue based on the Minister's reply, the entire Opposition staged a walk out from the House
